Clack Birm® Description

Clack Birm® is a lightweight, granular filtration media used to remove dissolved iron and manganese from water. It acts as an insoluble catalyst to trigger reactions between dissolved oxygen and the metals, creating a precipitate that is caught in the filter bed.

Key Specifications

• pH Range: 6.8 - 9.0 (neutralizing additives may be needed if pH < 6.8).
• Dissolved Oxygen (DO): Must be ≥ 15% of the iron content and ≥ 29% of the manganese content.
• Service Flow Rate: 3.5 - 5 gpm/sq. ft.
• Backwash Rate: 10 - 12 gpm/sq. ft. to ensure proper bed expansion (20% - 40%).
• Max Temperature: 38°C (100°F).
• Restrictions: Cannot be used if water contains oil or hydrogen sulfide, or if organic matter exceeds 4-5 ppm.

CONDITIONS FOR OPERATION

Alkalinity should be greater than two times the combined sulfate and chloride concentration.

• Temperature Range: 35-100oF
• Water pH range: 6.8-9.0
• Dissolved Oxygen (D.O.) content must be equal to at least 15% of the iron and 29% of the manganese content.
• Bed depth: 30-36 in.
• Maximum Pressure Drop: 2-4 psi (14-28 kPa) (∆ p increase from clean bed)
• Freeboard: 50% of bed depth (min.)
• Backwash rate: 10-12 gpm/sq. ft.
