Description

Katalox Light® Media is a high-performance, advanced catalytic filtration media used to remove heavy metals, suspended solids, and foul odors from water. It is widely used in residential well water and industrial systems to treat iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide.

Key Specifications

  • Composition: ZEOSORB (a lightweight zeolite carrier) coated with 10% gamma Manganese Dioxide (MnO₂).
  • Contaminant Limits: Effectively reduces up to 30 ppm of iron, 15 ppm of manganese, and 10 ppm of hydrogen sulfide.
  • Filtration Level: Traps sediments and suspended solids down to 3 μm.
  • pH Range: Works optimally between 6.0 and 9.0. (pH correction is recommended below 6.5).
  • Lifespan: Media typically lasts 7 to 10 years before requiring replacement.
  • Safety Certification: ANSI/NSF 61 certified for safe drinking water applications.

Usage & Operation

  • Contaminant Removal: The catalytic MnO₂ surface oxidizes dissolved metals into solid particles, which are then trapped in the media bed and flushed out during a backwash.
  • No Hazardous Chemicals: Unlike older medias (like Greensand), it does not require continuous dosing of potassium permanganate or chlorine.
  • Air-Injection Compatibility: For maximum capacity, it is often paired with an air-injection valve (like an AIO valve) that utilizes the air pocket in the tank to naturally oxidize the water.
  • Lightweight Advantage: Because it is roughly 50% lighter than traditional medias like Birm or Greensand, it requires significantly less water to backwash and flush the system.

When Oxygen Isn't Enough

While dissolved oxygen is sufficient for most applications, there are situations where additional support is needed. The manufacturer provides a helpful guideline:

  • The ORP Test: Using an Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) meter is the recommended way to know . If your water reads above -170 mV, Katalox-Light should work effectively using only the natural dissolved oxygen in the water .
  • Needing a Boost: If the ORP reading is below -170 mV, it indicates a reducing environment where oxygen alone is insufficient. In these cases, the manufacturer recommends adding a supplemental oxidant .

The "Rejuvenation" Process: Backwashing with Air

When people talk about "rejuvenating" Katalox-Light, they are usually referring to the backwashing cycle. This process doesn't add chemicals but instead "recharges" the media's environment with oxygen .

  • Air Draw Systems: Many Katalox-Light systems are designed with an Air Induction (AIO) valve. During the backwash cycle, this valve draws air into the top of the filter tank .
  • Creating an Air Pocket: This creates an air pocket inside the tank . When water flows through this pocket, it becomes saturated with dissolved oxygen.
  • Physical Cleaning and Recharge: The high-velocity backwash water lifts and agitates the media bed, physically flushing away trapped iron and manganese particles . The oxygen-rich water that is simultaneously introduced helps restore the media's oxidative capacity for the next service cycle
